Privacy Policy
This is the privacy policy for the HERide rider app — what it collects, why, who sees it, and what you can turn off.
Effective August 18, 2026 · Last updated August 18, 2026
The short version
This is the privacy policy for the HERide rider app. It explains what the app collects, why, and what you can turn off. The full HERide privacy policy at getheride.com/privacy covers everything we do as a company and controls if the two ever differ.
- We collect what a ride needs: who you are, where you are going, how you pay, and what happened on the trip.
- The app uses your location only while it is open. It does not collect your location when the app is closed or in the background.
- We never see or store your full card number. Payments run through Stripe.
- Your HERVerify photo is a live selfie your driver sees so she can find you at pickup. It is deleted within 24 hours, and it is not face recognition.
- Your driver never sees your phone number, your home address book, or your payment details.
- We do not sell your personal information and we do not use your trips for advertising.
What the app collects
- Your account
- Name, mobile number, email address, profile photo, and your city. We confirm your mobile number with a one-time code when you sign up and whenever you change it.
- Location — while the app is open only
- We use your location to set an accurate pickup point, show you nearby drivers, estimate your fare and arrival time, and support safety features during your trip. The rider app does not have background location access and cannot collect your location when it is closed or running behind other apps.
- Your trips
- Pickup and drop-off, saved addresses, route, times, distance, vehicle type, fare and its parts, promo codes and vouchers, cancellations, wait time, and the rating and comments you and your driver leave for each other. We also work out a reliability score from cancellations and no-shows.
- Payment
- Your card details go straight to Stripe, our payment processor. We hold only a Stripe token, the card brand, and the last four digits so you can tell your cards apart. We keep the receipt: amount, whether it was authorized, captured or refunded, and your wallet balance.
- HERVerify photo
- A live selfie taken with the front camera before you book, stored so the driver assigned to your trip can recognize you at pickup. It is deleted within 24 hours. It is not face recognition — see “HERVerify photos” below.
- Messages and calls
- In-app chat with your driver, and your conversations with support. When you call your driver, the call goes through a masked number so neither of you sees the other's real number. We keep the call and message metadata. We do not record rider-to-driver calls.
- Camera, photos, and contacts
- Only what you choose to give. The camera is used for HERVerify and your profile photo. Photos are used for your profile picture and anything you send your driver. Contacts, if you allow it, let you book a ride for someone in your contact list — we only use the contact you pick.
- Your device
- Device model and operating system, app version, language, IP address, a device identifier, your push notification token, and crash reports.
- How you use the app
- Screens you view and key actions — signing up, logging in, booking, paying — tied to your HERide account so we can tell a real problem from a rare one.
What your driver sees
Your driver sees your first name, your pickup and drop-off, your rating, and — where HERVerify is in use — your verification photo, for the length of that trip only.
She does not see your phone number, your last name, your email, your payment method, your other trips, your saved addresses, or anything you have told support. You see her first name, photo, rating, car, and plate before she arrives.
Safety features
- SOS
- Press SOS and a countdown appears with a cancel button, in case you tapped it by mistake. If you do not cancel, we escalate: we notify your emergency contacts and our safety team, and where the service is available we pass your name, phone number, and live location to an emergency dispatch partner who can reach 911 for you. That location sharing stops when you cancel or when the trip ends.
- Emergency contacts
- If you add them, we store the name and number you enter. We contact them only in connection with an SOS or a safety escalation on your account.
- Share your trip
- Sharing creates a link showing your live location, your driver's first name, her vehicle, and your arrival time. Anyone with the link can see it until you arrive, so send it only to people you trust. It stops working when the trip ends.
- Safety reports
- Anything you report is read by a person on our team. We keep the report, and what we did about it, for as long as we need to investigate and to meet any legal obligation.
HERVerify photos
Before you book, the app asks you to take a live selfie with the front camera. We store it so the driver who picks you up can see what you look like today — it helps her find you on a busy street.
We do not create a face template, do not run face matching, and do not compare your photo against any database — ours or anyone else's. There is no pass or fail. It is a photograph, held briefly, shown to one person.
- Live camera only. You cannot upload a photo from your library.
- A fresh photo each booking, so it reflects how you look that day.
- Stored encrypted in a dedicated store that holds nothing else, and deleted automatically within 24 hours.
- Only the driver assigned to your trip can see it, and only while that trip is active. It is never shown to other riders, never shown to other drivers, and never published anywhere.
- You can decline, but the app asks for a photo before it will let you book.
Teen riders and guardians
Where HERide offers teen accounts, a rider aged 13 to 17 rides under a linked adult guardian. We do not create accounts for anyone under 13. A teen cannot book without at least one active guardian link, and a guardian can revoke the link at any time.
Because supervision is the point, a guardian sees more than a normal rider account exposes: the teen's trip requests and history, pickup and drop-off, live trip location and status, and receipts. A guardian may also have to approve a trip before it is dispatched, and may limit which areas the teen can be picked up from or dropped at.
On a teen trip, the driver's phone streams live video and audio from the car cabin to the guardian through a time-limited link only the guardian can open. The stream is live only — never recorded, never stored, and gone when the trip ends. The driver must accept a consent screen before any stream starts.
Rides paid for by an organization
If your employer, school, or a program pays for your ride, that organization can see the trips it paid for: your name, the date and time, pickup and drop-off, distance, and what it was charged. It cannot see your personal trips, your payment methods, or your safety reports. What the organization does with what it sees is covered by its own privacy policy.
How long we keep it
- HERVerify photos: deleted automatically within 24 hours. We keep only a record that a photo was taken and when.
- Teen live in-car video and audio: never recorded, never stored.
- Trip and payment records: at least seven years, because tax, insurance, and rideshare rules require it.
- Support conversations: three years from the last message.
- Analytics and crash data: up to 12 months in identifiable form, then aggregated or deleted.
- Deleted accounts: removed or de-identified within 30 days, except the records above that we must keep.
Your choices
- Location
- Controlled in your phone's settings. While-using access is all the rider app needs. Without it you can still book by typing an address, but pickup will be less accurate.
- Camera, photos, contacts, microphone
- All optional and all revocable in your phone's settings. HERVerify needs the camera; in-app calling needs the microphone.
- Notifications
- Turn off push in your phone's settings. Manage marketing email at getheride.com/preferences or from the unsubscribe link in any marketing email. We will still send you service messages about trips, payments, and account security.
- Your details
- Update your name, email, and photo in the app. Change your mobile number in account settings — we will verify the new one.
- Deleting your account
- Request it in the app or email privacy@getheride.com. We will confirm it is you, then delete what we are not legally required to keep.
Your rights
Wherever you live in the United States, you can ask us to: tell you what we hold about you and how we use it; give you a copy; correct anything wrong; delete your account; and limit how we use sensitive information such as precise location and the photos you take in the app. We use sensitive information only to run and protect the service, never to infer things about you.
Email privacy@getheride.com. We will verify your identity against your account, respond within 45 days, and tell you if we need longer. Asking will never affect your price, your driver match, or your service.
